Airbnb Dropped the Guest Review Requirement: How Bay Area and Seattle Hosts Should Screen Guests Now

If you've noticed more first time guests landing at your Bay Area or Seattle listing lately, you're not imagining it. Airbnb quietly removed the guest review requirement that used to gate certain properties, so now guests can book with nothing more than a verified identity. No stay history, no positive reviews, no track record for you to check ahead of time. If you leaned on that review requirement as a screening tool, it's time to build a new one.

What Actually Changed

For years hosts could set their listing to only accept guests who were well reviewed and had a verified identity. Airbnb pulled that combined option from the booking settings dropdown. Every guest still has to verify their identity before booking anywhere on the platform, but review history is no longer part of the equation. Airbnb says the change opens the door to more travelers, especially people who are new to the platform or simply haven't stayed enough times to build up a review history.

Why It Matters for Your Listing

More first time guests isn't automatically a bad thing. Plenty of first timers turn into your best repeat guests down the road. But newcomers don't always know short term rental norms the way a five time Airbnb traveler does. Quiet hours, trash pickup days, or not inviting extra people over might need spelling out now, even if it used to feel obvious. If your house rules and welcome messaging have gotten a little thin over the years, this is a good moment to tighten them up before a guest who genuinely didn't know better ends up leaving you a rough review.

How to Screen Guests Now That Reviews Aren't the Filter

Reviews used to quietly do a lot of your screening for you. Here's how to pick up that slack without scaring off good guests:

  • Turn on the setting that requires guests to have a verified ID before they can book through Instant Book

  • Check what's still visible: profile photo, confirmed phone number, confirmed email address

  • For anything outside Instant Book, message before you confirm and ask about trip purpose and headcount

  • Put your house rules in plain, non negotiable language and ask guests to confirm they've read them

  • Watch for common red flags: local bookings for weekend nights, brand new accounts with no photo, vague or shifting trip purposes, and requests that push past your max occupancy

None of this means turning every booking request into an interrogation. It just means the review requirement was quietly doing some of this work for you, and now that lever is gone, a bit more of it falls on you. If keeping up with guest screening on top of everything else on your plate sounds like one more job you don't have time for, that's exactly the kind of day to day work we handle for Bay Area and Seattle hosts. Book a free rental consult and let us handle the day to day so you don't have to.
